Since half of our patient populations are non-Asians, they have never experienced acupuncture treatments before and do not have proper knowledge of said treatment. Our patients sought out western doctors but getting unsatisfying results, they began looking for alternative therapies and finally knocked our clinic door.
I always wish I could have met them earlier. For many cases, they did not have to suffer for such a long time. Eastern medicine has own perspective of human body and disease, so Eastern medicine doctors can help patients in other ways in which Western doctors cannot. In Asia, You can see Western medicine doctors and Eastern medicine doctors work together, and try to find the best treatment for each patient. I hope someday we can also achieve this system in Canada.
Due to drastic westernization in Asia, even Asians do not know the basic background of acupuncture. During the consultation and treatment, I always try to explain how our body works and how acupuncture helps the body system. Once they understand what causes the disease, they can cure the disease easily and they can prevent other problems. The goal of Eastern medicine is to prevent the disease before it happens.
Communication between the patients and myself is my first priority. The more I understand not just about their health problem but also, their character and life style, I can better treat each patient accordingly.
