Nighttime Incontinence and a Childhood Trauma

Recovered in 3 weeks Mental Health

Since around age nine, this woman in her early thirties had experienced episodes of wetting the bed at night without ever waking or sensing the need to urinate. The pattern had improved and worsened over the years, but it sharply worsened three months earlier following jaw surgery. She had experienced a traumatic event around that same age, nine, which had led to ongoing PTSD.

During the day, urinary control was completely normal. Her build showed generalized fluid retention, and palpation found widespread tenderness stretching from the chest down through the groin. Her temperament leaned anxious and easily unsettled.

A Nervous System Problem, Not a Bladder Problem

The fact that the problem occurred only at night pointed away from the bladder itself and toward the process of waking — of the body registering the bladder's signal while asleep and responding to it. That the symptom first appeared around the same age as a traumatic event, and that each flare-up followed a period of stress or physical shock, pointed strongly toward an emotional root resurfacing precisely during the unguarded, defenseless state of sleep.

Why Anxiety and Fluid Retention Show Up Together

The anxious temperament here appeared alongside generalized fluid retention and widespread tenderness — a state where stagnant fluid has become entangled with an overactive nervous system, each feeding the other. Treatment addressed both threads at once: the fluid-stagnation pattern driving the psychiatric symptoms, and the fright-based trauma response underneath it.

When the Body Feels Safe Again

Within a week of starting treatment, she woke on her own at night and made it to the bathroom for the first time in a long while. Sleep quality improved significantly, and anxiety and low mood dropped sharply at the same time. She agreed to continue treatment a further week to address her PCOS as well, and the improvement held.
